PERFORMING ARTS
Her Majesty's Theatre has been Ballarat's place of live entertainment for 122 years, since it first opened its doors as "The Academy of Music" on the 7th June 1875. The first production was a French operetta La Fille de Madam Angot, presented by the Royal Opera Bouffe Company of W S Lyster, Australia's first opera impresario.

Since that time the range of entertainment presented at the Theatre has been enormous, ranging from the melodramas and operas, pantomimes and political meetings, dinners and dances of Victorian times to the rock concerts, comedy nights, school concerts, drama and big musicals of today.
Many famous performers have appeared on the stage here including Dame Nellie Melba and Ignace Padereweski.
In June 2007, Peter Freund and Val Sarah launched their book "Her Maj:A History of Her Majesty's Theatre, Ballarat". Available at the theatre, the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, the Eureka Centre, and most good bookstores.
