ROADS

Before the gold discoveries in 1851, the roads in Victoria were no more than rough bush tracks, most of them passable only in the dry seasons.

RAILWAYS

"Our Rail Heritage"

The Ballaarat line from Geelong was opened in April 1862 - Australia's first country railway. In 1870 the Phoenix Foundry obtained the first Victorian government contract for the construction of steam locomotives (eventually totalling 357), previously imported from England. It became the most famous Victorian engineering works of its era.

TRAMS

For over 80 years, until 1971, Ballarat pulsed with the rumble of trams and was one of the last Australian provincial cities to enjoy this type of service. Today, tourists may enjoy a vintage tram ride on the last remaining stretch of track at Lake Wendouree.

STEAMERS AND BOATS

"Gill's Boatshed and The Golden City Paddlesteamer"

The first steam boat on Lake Wendouree was in 1865. Lake Wendouree and the Botanical Gardens became the centre of family and community life. Parties from towns in the district arrived regularly by train, but swimming was not allowed.
